Tax Assessments in the Township of Conmee
Assessments in the Township of Conmee are established by the Municipal Property Assessment Corporation. MPAC is a private entity that provides assessment services under the authority of the Provincial Government. MPAC currently uses a system called "Fair Market Value" or Fair Market Assessment". To put it simply, MPAC uses recent sales of similar properties to assign a value to your property. MPAC also uses other criteria to establish these values. Once the assessment is assigned to the properties this information is provided to the Township. The Township applies a tax rate to your value to determine how much you will pay in property tax. The tax rate is calculated using a computer program that contains the assessments of all properties in Conmee, and can calculate individual taxes using the amount of revenue must be raised in a given year. The higher your assessment, the more you will pay in taxes. If you feel that your assessment is too high, you may "Request a Reconsideration" of your assessment. A Request for Reconsideration is free. If you disagree with the decision on the Request for Reconsideration, you may appeal to the Assessment Appeal Board. At this level fees do apply.
Tax Bills in the Township of Conmee
The Township office can now accept debit cards! We do not accept credit cards.
Taxes bills are sent out twice a year, with each bill divided into two payments for your convenience. The first bill is called the Interim Tax Bill and is usually sent in early February with payments due at the end of February and the end of April (NEW!). The Interim Bill is based on 50% of last year's bill. Once Council determines how much revenue must be raised by taxation, a Final Tax Bill is sent, usually in early August. The Final Bill calculates your total taxes for the year and subtracts any payments made. Final payments are usually due at the end of August and the end of October (NEW!). A penalty of 1.25% per month is added to any outstanding balances, on the first day of the next month.
Tax payments may be made at the Municipal Office, 19 Holland Road West or mailed to:

Payments may also be made at the Provincial Alliance Credit Union in Kakabeka Falls or the TD Bank if you are a member. You will require your roll number, which is shown on your tax bill. You may also use their online banking services to make these payments.
There is a mail slot to the left of the Office doors. Payments made through the mail slot will be applied to accounts on the next working day. All payments in our office at 9:00 am on the day penalty is applied are processed first. Payments made after 9:00 am on the day penalty is applied will be subject to that penalty. Payments may also be made at the Provincial Alliance Credit Union. Payments made at the Credit Union are applied to accounts on the next working day. If you make a payment at the Credit Union on the last day taxes are due, it will be applied to your account before penalty is added. We also accept post-dated cheques. Post-dated cheques will be applied to your account on the day they become negotiable.
Property owners who have unpaid taxes after the due date will receive a Notice of Arrears. This Notice will show the amount outstanding as well as the penalty that has been applied. Accounts that remain outstanding for 3 years will be placed into Tax Registration. Once a property has been placed into Tax Registration, we can no longer accept partial payments. The owner becomes liable for the total amount of outstanding taxes, penalty, and fees associated with the Tax Registration Process. If the taxes remain unpaid at the end of the Tax Registration year, the property will be sold in a tax sale.
Property owners who cannot pay the full amount of taxes owing should contact the Treasurer to arrange a payment schedule.
