Position Overview:
The Township of Conmee is seeking a motivated and community‑focused individual to join our team as a Deputy Clerk–Treasurer Intern. This is a full‑time, temporary internship for a one‑year term, providing hands‑on experience in municipal administration, financial processes, and legislative duties. The intern will support the Clerk and Treasurer in day‑to‑day municipal operations and perform assigned duties under their direction and supervision.
This position is funded through the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation (NOHFC) Workforce Development Program.
Purpose of Position:
- To provide a wide variety of administrative support services to the Clerk and Treasurer
- To assist with the management of the day‑to‑day obligations of the Township
Scope of Position:
- Complies with legislation, by‑laws, resolutions, policies, and Council decisions
- Works within municipal policies, procedures, and priorities
- Performs accepted office management practices
- Liaises with departments and committees to ensure direction from Council is communicated and implemented
Responsibilities:
1. Municipal Deputy Clerk Intern
- Perform statutory duties of the Municipal Clerk under the Municipal Act and other legislation (under supervision)
- Assist with drafting by‑laws, policies, resolutions, minutes, and Council materials
- Prepare agendas and background materials, including research as needed
- Assist with preparation for municipal elections
- Perform records management duties
- Provide administrative support for cemetery and public works administration
- Arrange conferences, training, and travel bookings
- Respond to inquiries from the public, stakeholders, and external agencies
- Prepare background information and research reports
- Other duties as assigned
2. Municipal Deputy Treasurer
- Perform statutory duties of the Treasurer under the Municipal Act (under supervision)
- Assist in budget preparation, including revenue and expenditure estimates
- Assist with grant applications and tracking
- Assist with tax bill preparation and mail‑outs; support tax arrears follow‑up
- Provide financial information and general financial administrative support
- Other duties as assigned
3. Administration
- Plan and organize work and review priorities with supervisors
- Follow occupational health and safety practices
- Assist with website updates and newsletter development
- Other duties as assigned
Working Conditions:
- Office environment with frequent interruptions
- High volume of tasks with tight deadlines
- Regular hours: Monday–Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
- May attend up to two evening Council meetings per month
- Average of 35 hours per week
- Occasional workshops, conferences, or training events
Knowledge and Skills:
- Good knowledge of the community
- Strong organizational and analytical ability
- Sound judgment, tact, strong public relations and communication skills
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships
- Ability to maintain confidentiality
- Proficiency with office computer applications (word processing, spreadsheets, email, records systems)
- Understanding of municipal planning and accounting processes
- High level of integrity
- Ability to work independently
Qualifications:
- Valid driver’s licence
- First Aid & CPR, or willingness to obtain
- Relevant experience in administration, finance, customer service, or municipal‑related work is an asset
- Post‑secondary training in Business, Political Science, Public Administration, Office Administration, or a related field is an asset
- Knowledge of municipal legislation (Municipal Act, MFIPPA, Municipal Elections Act) is an asset
NOHFC Candidate Eligibility Requirements:
Applicants must meet the following Workforce Development Program criteria:
- Be a new entrant to the workforce, transitioning careers, or unemployed/underemployed
- Not have previously participated in an NOHFC internship under the 2020 mandate
- Be 18 years of age or older
- Be legally eligible to work in Canada
- Reside in Northern Ontario once hired (District of Thunder Bay)

CO-OP STUDENT POSITIONS
Co-op student placements allow students to explore and work in various fields. These placements provide an opportunity to explore working in different jobs. These position may be paid or unpaid depending on the position and funding availability.
Who is eligible?
The co-op student placements are open to senior high school students.
